Risk factors for HTLV-I among heterosexual STD clinic attenders
Article Abstract:
The risk of sexual transmission of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) may increase with the presence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and bruising during sex. In addition, women have a greater risk of acquiring HTLV-1 through sex than men. Researchers examined 994 patients of an STD clinic in Jamaica. Seven percent of 515 heterosexual men had HTLV-1, as did 7.9% of 479 women. Patients, especially men, who had received blood transfusions in the past were more likely to be positive for HTLV-1. Men and women who reported an abrasion of the genitals caused by sexual intercourse were more likely to be infected with HTLV-1. Genital ulcers caused by STDs may also facilitate HTLV-1 transmission.

Incidence of HIV and HTLV-I infection among sexually transmitted disease clinic attenders in Jamaica
Article Abstract:
HIV infection among patients at a sexually transmitted disease clinic in Jamaica is associated with alcohol use before sex, sex for money, cocaine use, and sexual experience. Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) infection was more common among patients older than 30.
