Developing and Implementing Computerized Protocols for Standardization of Clinical Decisions
Article Abstract:
Decision support tools can allow doctors to keep up with advances in medicine and also provide consistency in medical decision making. They could also prevent many medical errors. Computerized decision support systems can be configured to contain much more detail than text or paper-based flow charts. They can also be tailored to individual patients. However, doctors must be willing to use the tools in their daily practice. Computerized protocols for mechanical ventilation and management of intravenous fluid and hemodynamic factors in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome are used to illustrate these points.
