Diagnosis and treatment of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura: recommendations of the American Society of Hematology
Article Abstract:
Treatment and identification guidelines for patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) have been developed by a panel from the American Society of Hematology. ITP is an autoimmune disease that destroys blood platelets. In the absence of solid scientific evidence many of these guidelines are based primarily on anecdotal evidence or opinion. Patients with mild ITP probably do not need extensive screening tests, treatment, or hospitalization. Glucocorticoids or immunoglobulin treatments may be necessary for more serious conditions. Pregnant women with ITP may require more individually tailored treatment.

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in pregnancy
Article Abstract:
Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in pregnancy generally presents no threat and monitoring is adequate, but once symptomatic, it should be treated aggressively, as the antibodies which destroy the platelets can cross the placenta to the fetus. ITP is an autoimmune disorder lowering the platelet count, sometimes to dangerous levels, at which time symptoms such as bruising, nosebleeds, or hemorrhaging may appear. Decisions about C-section birth should made on the basis of a fetal platelet count.

Prenatal care of the diabetic patient
Article Abstract:
Uncontrolled diabetes during pregnancy can result in birth defects, lung complications, or even infant death. Daily glucose tests, proper diet, consistent insulin injections, and close monitoring of fetal movement and development are important in the pregnant diabetic patient. Fetal size and condition will likely guide the delivery plan. Possible risks associated with diabetes during pregnancy and recommendations for its control are presented.
