Doctors experienced in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis may want to try using drugs that block tumor necrosis factor. Tumor necrosis factor is an immune system protein that causes inflammation and it has been implicated in the development of rheumatoid arthritis.

The regulation of drugs in Europe involves the Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products, the European Medicines Evaluation Agency, and the Committee of Heads of Agencies. The structure of these agencies and their operation is discussed.
