Diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer
Article Abstract:
Ovarian cancer kills 4,000 women in the UK every year. Causes of the disease are unknown, but women who have not had children, or who have been pregnant for the first time later in life, appear to be more susceptible. Most cases of ovarian cancer occur in women over the age of 45. Early discovery of the cancer gives a better prognosis, but accurate screening procedures for early stage cancer are not yet available. Surgery, including hysterectomy and removal of metastases sites, is the usual treatment. Trials of the combined use of paclitaxel and platinum in chemotherapy have yielded promising results.

Screening for ovarian cancer: is it worth the risk?
Article Abstract:
Ovarian cancer is usually at an advanced staged when diagnosed because symptoms are nonspecific, such as abdominal swelling or menstrual irregularities. The survival rate is highest with early detection, but the survival rate may not necessarily increase by screening women before symptoms occur. Ultrasound scanning detects abnormalities, but these may not necessarily be cancerous. Subsequent diagnostic surgery may do more damage than good, while some women may experience anxiety while undergoing tests that ultimately prove negative.

Knowledge essential to ovarian cancer care
Article Abstract:
Ovarian cancer accounts for 5% of all cancer in women in the UK, causing over 4,000 deaths annually. Some 6,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year. Although many women will not notice any symptoms, abdominal and pelvic discomfort may be present, along with generally feeling unwell and weight loss. The disease can be treated by surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
