Estrogen replacement in perimenopause-related depression: a preliminary report
Article Abstract:

Basal and stimulated gonadotropin levels in the perimenopause
Article Abstract:
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels appear to be distinguishing factors between women entering menopause and those with regular menstrual cycles. Resting FSH and LH levels were measured in six postmenopausal women, 11 older women with irregular menstrual cycles (perimenopausal group), and six younger and 11 older women with regular cycles (control groups). These measurements were repeated after hormonal stimulation. Resting FSH and LH levels were higher in the perimenopausal group than the two control groups and similar to those seen in the post-menopausal group.

Differential behavioral effects of gonadal steroids in women with and in those without premenstrual syndrome
Article Abstract:
Women who have recurring symptoms of premenstrual syndrome may be responding to the hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle. Some women experience bloating, pain, mood changes and other symptoms prior to menstruation that stop after the menses. Researchers suppressed ovarian hormone secretion with leuprolide in 10 women with premenstrual syndrome, causing a decrease in symptoms. Hormone replacement with estradiol or progesterone caused the symptoms to return. Fifteen women without premenstrual syndrome had no mood changes when given the drugs.
