Elevated blood levels of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in a pregnant woman may be a sign that she will deliver prematurely. This confirms that an intrauterine infection may play a role in premature birth because G-CSF is involved in infectious processes.

The preterm prediction study: risk factors for indicated preterm births
Article Abstract:
Risk factors for intentional premature birth differ from factors associated with spontaneous preterm delivery. An infant may be delivered before the full term of pregnancy for infant or maternal medical conditions. Researchers examined risk factors for indicated preterm birth in 2,929 pregnant women, of whom 448 delivered early. Preterm delivery was medically indicated in 28% of preterm deliveries, and more common when the fetus had a Mullerian duct abnormality, the mother had protein in her urine, high blood pressure, lung disease, a previous preterm birth, or was black.

The Preterm Prediction Study: effect of gestational age and cause of preterm birth on subsequent obstetric outcome
Article Abstract:
Women who have a premature birth are more likely than other women to have another one in a subsequent pregnancy. This was the conclusion of a study of 1,711 pregnant women, which also found that delivery between 23 and 27 weeks was an especially high risk factor for a second premature delivery.
