Dilated cardiomyopathy in HIV-infected patients
Article Abstract:
HIV patients have a higher risk of heart disease than non-infected people but it is not clear if the virus directly damages heart cells or some other mechanism is involved. A 1998 study found that many HIV patients have dilated cardiomyopathy, an early sign of heart failure. These patients have a poorer prognosis than HIV-infected patients without heart disease. Although HIV has been found in heart cells, it may not directly cause heart disease. Other factors must be considered, including antiviral drugs, other viruses, immune disorders, and malnutrition.
