Doctor ranks grow 17% in 5 years
Article Abstract:
There were 720,325 practicing physicians in the U.S. as of December 31, 1995, 17% more than in 1990. Primary care physicians, however, accounted for only 33.5% of all practicing doctors, down from 34.7% in 1990. The number of practicing physicians has grown 176.5% since 1960, a figure considerably higher than the U.S. population growth of 43.4%. In 1995, there were 274 physicians for every 100,000 people, up from 142 per 100,000 people in 1980.

Majority vote for primary care: Match continues move to generalist medicine
Article Abstract:
National Residency Matching Program results suggest that curriculum changes and economics are countering the traditional bias toward medical specialization. In 1997, 56% of US medical school seniors will match to residencies in primary care fields. That is up from 54.4% in 1996. The result will not necessarily be a 50-50 split between generalists and specialists, however, because many internal-medicine residents adopt subspecialties.
