Doctor salaries beat inflation: 1991 marks first real rise in three years
Article Abstract:
Median net income for physicians increased for the first time in three years, rising 6.9% in 1991 to $139,000. However, because of a 4.2% inflation rate, 1991 real income rose only 2.6%. Physician net income had declined 1.3% in 1990 and .6% in 1989. Radiologists received the largest gain in income, 11.5%, while surgeons received no increase at all. Nonetheless, surgeons remain the highest-paid specialty, with a $200,000 median income. The lack of growth in surgeon income may reflect government efforts to curtail surgeon expenditures.

Study hits physician fees for workers' comp in Calif
Article Abstract:
Physicians and medical corporations in California received an average of $502 an hour for medicolegal examination of workers in back-injury cases, according to a report by the Workers Compensation Research Institute. A back injury costs five to ten times as much in California as in other states. Payment levels are based on charges during the previous year, rather than costs. Executive director Jay A. Gold of the American College of Legal Medicine recommends that neutral experts be hired to evaluate claims.

Fees for physician services increasing at slower rate
Article Abstract:
Analysis of Consumer Price Index figures shows that the cost of physicians' services grew 6% in 1990 and 6.3% in 1991, compared to a 7% growth average in the previous nine years. The slow economy may have caused some persons to postpone care. Other explanations include the increasing number of salaried physicians, cost containment efforts and outside sources of physicians' income, such as ownership of treatment facilities.
