Emphasis on education: AMA continues efforts to redirect Medicare PRO program
Article Abstract:
Delegates at an interim meeting of the American Medical Assn (AMA) approved a report on the AMA's efforts to reform Medicare's Peer Review Organizations (PROs). Medicare's Fourth Scope of Work incorporates a number of AMA recommendations; for example, physician-reviewers must be licensed and practicing in the state where they review physicians. AMA delegates also favor encouraging the Health Care Financing Administration to continue releasing patient mortality and other data, which should be gathered under strict conditions and used as an educational tool to improve patient care.

J-1 visas a target in groups' push to limit physician supply
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association and five other medical groups have released a consensus statement that calls for the elimination of J-1 visas that allow international medical graduates (IMG) to come to the US for residency training. Although the J-1's require the IMG's to leave following their training period, many IMG's obtain waivers allowing them to stay in the US as practitioners in medically underserved areas. The proliferation of IMG's has contributed to the oversupply of physicians in the US.

AMA, NIH want to raise physician 'literacy' on genetics
