Donkey work
Article Abstract:
Nurses are leaving the UK National Health Service (NHS) because of poor management. Managers have become so involved with trying to make the NHS operate more efficiently that they have failed to appreciate the value of nursing care. They have given nurses difficult workloads yet blamed nurses when problems occur due to these workloads, and they have failed to facilitate career development due to the ceilings in the pay structure. Other management problems include over-use of regulations, short-term contracts, and the agency-nurse system.

Spectre at the feast
Article Abstract:
Changes in the structure of the UK National Health Service require doctors and nurses to work together on a more equal basis in the planning of primary health services. However, traditional professional structures, imbalances and prejudices threaten these moves towards more equality, according to a survey of district nurses and general practitioners. Nurses and doctors have insufficient real understanding of one another, a factor which must be addressed before there can be any true collaboration on service planning.
