Dreams of leaving
Article Abstract:
A nurse describes the difference in nursing care being received by two dying patients, Anne and Irene. Anne seems more able to cope with her illness on some days when she is able to talk about her feelings, but on other occasions the pain she experiences makes her wish to end her own life. She asks the nurse about taking an overdose and whether, if she does, it will result in the nurse losing her job. Irene's pain is relieved by opiates administered via a diamorphine pump, and she is quietly sliding into unconsciousness with peace and dignity, surrounded by her family.
