Drug interactions
Article Abstract:
Many drug interactions are caused by the effect of one of the drugs on cytochrome P450. This is an enzyme complex that metabolizes most drugs. If the complex is inhibited by any one drug, that would slow the metabolism of other drugs. Some drugs can also increase the activity of the complex. This would increase the metabolism of other drugs. Tests can be devised to predict which drugs can interact with cytochrome P450.

Drug interactions with St. John's wort
Article Abstract:
St. John's wort can interfere with some drugs, including cyclosporine, warfarin, indinavir, digoxin, oral contraceptives, theophylline, amitriptyline, nefazodone, paroxetine, and a group of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The exact mechanism has not been determined, but the herb may stimulate drug-metabolizing enzymes.

Substituting for cerivastatin (Baycol)
Article Abstract:
Doctors can substitute another statin for Baycol but should be careful not to use any statin drug in combination with gemfibrozil (Lopid). This combination can cause muscle damage, which is why Baycol was withdrawn from the US market in August, 2001. Statins are a group of cholesterol-lowering drugs.
