Dying for a nurse
Article Abstract:
The number of nursing posts lost throughout England as a result of financial deficits runs into thousands, although the Department of Health and hospital managers think such service reconfigurations have no direct impact on patient care. A study conducted in 1999 to investigate staffing levels and the outcome data for almost 120,000 patients at 30 acute trusts found that cutting nurse numbers costs lives and patients were 26% more likely to die on wards as a result of staff shortage.

Reducing overcrowding on student practice placements

The UK government has increased the number of nursing student places as it is facing shortage of registered nurses, which further has resulted in placement areas being overcrowded. A mental health NHS trust in London in partnership with local higher education institutes has created a framework to relieve the pressure on placements.
