Early or deferred zidovudine therapy in HIV-infected patients without an AIDS-defining illness: a meta-analysis
Article Abstract:
Patients with an HIV diagnosis may experience only short-term benefits from early intervention with the drug zidovudine. There does not seem to be any long term survival benefit with this drug, but it may help to alleviate symptoms for a few short years. Researchers reviewed and statistically analyzed 10 clinical trials that totalled more than 6000 patients with HIV but not with AIDS found that those patients who exhibit symptoms of the HIV disease seem to benefit the most from this treatment. However, these benefits apparently fade after two years' time. The progression of the disease may be mildly delayed for both symptomatic and asymptomatic in patients, but the ultimate outcome is not deferred. Short term benefits were nearly absent when looking at patients by CD4 cell counts, which is an indication of damage to the immune system.

The effect of dietary protein restriction on the progression of diabetic and nondiabetic renal diseases: a meta-analysis
Article Abstract:
Restricting protein intake may delay the progression of chronic kidney disease. Researchers performed a search of the medical literature from 1966 to 1994 to find studies on the association between low-protein diets and chronic kidney disease. Five studies comprising 1,413 patients with nondiabetic kidney disease and five studies comprising 108 patients with diabetic kidney disease were identified. Restricting protein intake through diet was found to significantly delay the progression of kidney disease in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients. Low-protein diets were associated with reduced risks of kidney failure and of death. The suggested daily protein intake for a low-protein diet is 0.6 grams per kilogram of body weight. Patients must receive protein that can be used by the body and that contains enough calories.

Predictors and impact of patients lost to follow-up in a long-term randomized trial of immediate versus deferred antiretroviral treatment
Article Abstract:
Young HIV patients, those who have used intravenous drugs, and those attending smaller HIV research clinics are more likely to be lost to follow-up before the research is completed. Patients not completing the treatment trial and unable to be contacted may progress to AIDS more rapidly, but their outcome is unknown.
