Effect of iodophor vs iodine tincture skin preparation on blood culture contamination rate
Article Abstract:
Iodine tincture may be more effective than iodophor for preventing contamination of blood cultures from patients with a suspected systemic bacterial infection. Iodine tincture and iodophor are antiseptics used to clean the skin before insertion of the needle into a vein to draw blood. Among 8,467 blood cultures from patients treated at the emergency room of a large urban medical center, 626 (7%) were infected with pathogenic, or disease-causing, microorganisms and 421 (5%) were contaminated. Less than four percent of the blood cultures from patients prepared with iodine tincture were contaminated, compared with more than 6% of those prepared with iodophor. The most common contaminants were coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteria. Health care personnels should follow strictly the procedures designed to prevent contamination of the blood sample from bacteria on the skin when drawing blood.

Association Between Use of Unconventional Therapies and Conventional Medical Services
Article Abstract:
Many Americans use alternative medicine in addition to conventional medicine. In a survey of 24,676 US adults, 2% used alternative medicine only, 60% used conventional medical care and 6% used both. Those who used both visited their doctor more often than the other two groups and used more preventive services such as mammograms, Pap tests, blood pressure measurement and influenza vaccination. Those with the most doctor visits were more than twice as likely to use alternative medicine as those with the least doctor visits.

New blood cancer therapies under study
Article Abstract:
Researches are exploring the potential of novel targeted compounds used alone or in combination with present therapies to treat leukemia and lymphomas. The effectiveness of the drug MK-0457, a compound developed for treating chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and other types of leukemia, and rituximab, a well-known drug approved for the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, are discussed.
