Effective orthodontics: achieving objectives, avoiding misadventures
Article Abstract:
Orthodontists may prevent unwanted tooth movement by following several key principles. They must first have a clear idea of the treatment goal. They need to understand how much force and is needed to move teeth and for what period of time. Familiarity with proper equipment is essential, including the types of wires and their movement properties. Unwanted tooth movement can be avoided by knowing how much force each appliance creates and by distributing force over a larger area. The acronym PREP: picture, requirements, equipment, prevent, summarizes the steps.

Maxillary midline diastemas: a look at the causes
Article Abstract:
There are many causes of maxillary midline diastemas. This is the medical term for gaps between teeth, particularly the upper incisors. This is very common in children and leaves room for future teeth. Most adults consider gaps between teeth to be unattractive. Causes include discrepancies in the sizes of adjacent teeth, excessive tooth overlap, excessive angular displacement of teeth, muscle weakness and missing teeth. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause.

Uprighting molars without extrusion
Article Abstract:
The application of two helical uprighting springs in an orthodontic appliance allows a tipped molar to be uprighted without extruding the tooth. The use of two uprighting springs between a target molar and the adjacent teeth, placed as mirror images of each other, cancel intrusive and extrusive forces and provide the desired rotation without extrusion.
