Effects of auditory stimuli on comatose patients with head injury
Article Abstract:
Nurses caring for comatose patients often feel that it is important to stimulate these patients. Despite scientific evidence that such strategies are beneficial, various techniques such as talking to patients, and playing radio and television are employed. A small pilot study used electroencephalography, behavioral scaling tests, and anecdotal notes of patient behavior to determine the response of comatose patients to the presentation of popular music. Because only 3 male and 2 female automobile injury patients, ranging in age from 15 to 29 years, were enlisted in this study no statistically significant results could be reported. Although in many cases the responses to music were small and anecdotal, there were clear indications that some comatose patients can respond to auditory stimulation. These findings may indicate that electroencephalography alone, while objective, may be inadequate for judging the responses of these patients. It is hoped that the encouraging results of this pilot study will lead to larger and more systematic studies of auditory stimulation of comatose patients. A hidden injury
Article Abstract:
Transverse sacral fracture is very rare injury, which can occur due to a fall from a height or an automobile accident. Sacral fractures are easily missed on conventional radiographs and the neurological deficit being subtle adds to the delay in diagnosis. A case report of a 65-year-old woman who had a sudden fall complained of pain in the hips highlights the benign presentation and the unpleasant outcome of such an injury.

Blackthorn injury: a report of three interesting cases
Article Abstract:
Blackthorn injury is common in causing infections and tissue reactions of synovial structures. The three exciting case studies of cystic blackthorn ranuloma, blackthorn synovitis with digital nerve entrapment, and multiple blackthorn syndrome and recovery by removing the foreign body fragments and surrounding tissues are discussed.
