Effects of race and income on mortality and use of services among Medicare beneficiaries
Article Abstract:
Blacks and low-income blacks and whites on Medicare may not be receiving the same quality of health care as those with higher incomes. Researchers linked 1990 census data to 1993 Medicare data on 24.2 million elderly whites and 2.1 million elderly blacks to determine the effect of income level on health care. Blacks and low-income beneficiaries were less likely to see a physician regularly and less likely to receive many preventive services such as immunization and mammograms. They also had higher hospitalization rates and higher mortality rates and were more likely to receive sub-optimal care.

Plenty of nothing -- a report from the Medicare Commission
Article Abstract:
The National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare concluded its work without producing any recommendations. The 17 members were unable to come to a consensus because their proposal package received only 10 of the required 11 votes. Most of the discussion was about how Medicare will be financed when the number of Medicare beneficiaries doubles in the year 2030. Most people agree that the costs of the program at that time will exceed current revenue sources. Consequently, new sources will be needed.

Learn nothing, forget nothing -- the Medicare commission redux
Article Abstract:
As of 2001, Medicare is probably in better financial shape than it has ever been. Economic growth in the 1990s created a budget surplus, and revenue flows into Medicare and Social Security trust funds ensured that the funds would not run out of money in the near future.
