Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases: a biological evolutionary drama
Article Abstract:
The increase in drug-resistant infections may make it even more important for dentists to follow universal precautions with all patients and to prevent misuse of antibiotics. A report from the National Institute of Dental Research suggests that the growing use and abuse of antibiotics for human illness and in food products has created drug resistance. Tuberculosis and strep and staph organisms have all become resistant to several treatment drugs. Scientific research is needed to develop new drugs that work in new ways to fight infectious diseases.

The significance of a human smile: observations on Bell's palsy
Article Abstract:
Bell's palsy can make it difficult for people to smile. It is caused by inflammation of the seventh cranial nerve, which paralyses it. The seventh cranial nerve is called the facial nerve because it controls the muscles of the face. Bell's palsy strikes about 50,000 Americans every year and its exact cause is not known. Most people recover within several months. Most treatments are not very effective. Surgery can help those with chronic paralysis and most can learn to smile again.

An update on HIV/AIDS
Article Abstract:
Knowledge about the immunology and transmission of HIV infection and AIDS should continue to improve all aspects of medical and dental care. Although the search for an effective vaccine has not proved entirely successful, there is hope for containing the infectious aspects of the epidemic. Education about safe sex and sterile drug needles on a global scale is encouraging but behavioral changes cannot entirely eliminate this disease.
