Endometrial carcinoma
Article Abstract:
An estimated 34,000 women will develop endometrial cancer in 1996 and 6,000 will die. Excess estrogen is the biggest risk factor because it stimulates the endometrium, which is the inner lining of the uterus. The disease also appears to have environmental and genetic components. The initial symptom is postmenopausal uterine bleeding. Examination should include a pelvic exam, Pap smear and endometrial biopsy. Hysterectomy is the primary treatment, but radiation treatment and chemotherapy can be used in women who cannot have surgery.
