Energy expenditure with indoor exercise machines
Article Abstract:
A treadmill appears to be the most effective indoor exercise machine for maximizing energy expenditure and cardiovascular training. Researchers measured energy expenditure, heart rate and oxygen uptake in eight healthy men and five healthy women while they used six different exercise machines: a treadmill, an Airdyne machine, a cross-country ski machine, a stair stepper, a cycle ergometer and a rowing ergometer. All the participants were healthy and physically fit. On each machine, each participant exercised for 5 minutes at a light pace, 5 minutes at a moderate pace and 5 minutes at a heavy pace. Energy expenditure, heart rate and oxygen use were highest when the participants were on the treadmill, especially when they were exercising at a moderate or heavy pace. Cross-country ski machines, rowers and stair steppers were also more effective in boosting energy use and heart rate than the Airdyne machine.

Prognostic Value of a Treadmill Exercise Score in Symptomatic Patients With Nonspecific ST-T Abnormalities on Resting ECG
Article Abstract:
The Duke treadmill score appears to be accurate in identifying patients who have coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is hard to detect in people who have pre-existing abnormalities on an electrocardiogram (ECG). In a study of 939 such patients compared to 1,466 patients with no such abnormality, the Duke treadmill score was used to assign patients to a low-risk, intermediate-risk, and a high-risk group. Seven-year survival rates were 97% in the low-risk group, 92% in the intermediate-risk group and 76% in the high-risk group.

Treadmill burns calories faster than other machines
Article Abstract:
The treadmill was found to produce the highest energy expenditure and cardiorespiratory training impetus of various exercise machines tested. A cross country skiing simulator, an Airdyne, a treadmill, a cycle ergometer, a stair stepper and a rowing ergometer were tested. The findings appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Assn for May 8, 1996.
