Ensuring safe and effective medications for children
Article Abstract:
The Pediatric Research Equity Act of 2003 and the extended marketplace exclusivity incentives from the FDA may encourage the pharmaceutical industry to begin testing some drugs on children. Many children are treated with drugs that have never been tested in children. This is partly because childhood diseases are a small market and many researchers are reluctant to conduct drug research on children.

Biomedical patents and the public's health
Article Abstract:
A drug patent, which is a government-sanctioned monopoly, allows its owner to prevent others from making, using or selling a given medication for a set amount of time. The issues surrounding AIDS drugs, oseltamivir, and torcetrapib illustrate the thorny imbalance between protecting the intellectual property rights of companies and the sometimes competing needs of patients.

Alarm sounded on fake, tainted drugs: some wholesalers are a weak link in a dangerous chain
