The long and winding road
Article Abstract:
Plans to introduce legislation to allow UK nurses prescribing powers were begun in 1986, although by 1999 only a few nurses have the legal right to carry out a task which would save doctors' time, improve patient care and reduce costs. The government is planning a 14 million pounds sterling education scheme to train up to 20,000 prescribing nurses by the year 2002. Legal changes were made to UK prescribing law in 1994, allowing nurses to prescribe drugs to patients on a substitute basis, not as a totally different care management strategy.

Dazed and confused
Article Abstract:
Health care staff can face practical challenges when seeking to implement isolation precautions when nursing people with Clostridium-difficule-associated diarrhoea and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, according to research based on semistructured interviews, structured observation and participant observation. It is clear that staff need guidelines on issues such as when gloves and an apron should be worn. Attention must be given to the factors that determine practice from the health care personnel's point of view.
