Epilepsy treatment enters a new era
Article Abstract:
Physicians discussed new treatments for epilepsy at the 1997 annual meeting of the American Epilepsy Society. Epilepsy affects about 2.5 million Americans and 85% will respond completely or partially to anticonvulsants such as phenytoin, carbamazepine and valproic acid. However, these drugs have side effects and newer drugs such as gabapentin, lamotrigine and topiramate were approved in the 1990's. The vagus nerve stimulator is a medical device that can help many patients. Gamma-knife radiosurgery is also effective in patients resistant to drug therapy. Brain stimulation and drug delivery to epileptic areas of the brain are being evaluated.
