Erythropoietin: Treating severe anemia
Article Abstract:
The production of red blood cells is stimulated by a natural protein called erythropoietin (EPO), which is produced by the kidney and if the level of EPO is insufficient, the red blood cell ratio drops, resulting in anemia that reduces the availability of oxygen to the body. The appropriate epoetin treatment, which raises the hemoglobin up to 12 g/dL, is recommended for severe anemia, depending on how the patient responds to epoetin.
