Establishing Efficient Partner Notification Periods for Patients With Chlamydia
Article Abstract:
The sexual partner notification system developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adequately identifies people who have likely been exposed to chlamydia. Researchers interviewed 1,109 people infected with chlamydia, and identified 2,293 sexual partners that may have been infected. Forty percent of the partners were located, and virtually all were tested for chlamydia. Eighty-eight percent of infected partners were diagnosed through contact tracing. The remaining infected, untreated sex partners were mostly men with longstanding chlamydia infection without symptoms.

Invoking, Monitoring, and Relinquishing a Public Health Power
Article Abstract:
Detention of accused prostitutes for sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing and treatment contributes to STD control efforts. From 1970 to 1994, Colorado Springs, CO, held 4,965 prostitutes for up to 72 hours for testing and care. The tests revealed 818 cases of gonorrhea. Involuntary detention and testing yielded 218 positive tests for disease from 1,564 total tests. Prostitutes were inconvenienced by detention, but they viewed the testing and treatment as appropriate.
