Physician input on pressing ethical issues; forum addresses organ harvesting, confidentiality of records, AIDS reporting
Article Abstract:
The June 1996 American Medical Association Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs did not see a pitched battle on assisted suicide as was expected. The Council is reconsidering its policy on the reporting of HIV status in autopsy reports. The current position calls for reporting HIV status only if it relates to cause of death. Security for computer files was discussed and so was the harvesting of organs from dying patients over familial objections.

Ethics panel hears views on placebos, patents, gag rules
Article Abstract:
Physicians are concerned that placebo control, the use of confidentiality clauses, such as "gag rules," and the patenting of human genes may compromise the welfare and rights of patients. Several physicians voiced their opinions at an open forum conducted by the American Medical Association Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs.
