Evaluation of dual energy x-ray absorptiometry as a method of measurement of body fat
Article Abstract:
The precision of the Hologic QDR densitometer (QDR), which measures body fat by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), was compared with conventional techniques of underwater weighing, skinfold thickness measurements, bioelectric impedance analysis and deuterium oxide dilution. QDR was also compared with Lunar DPX densitometer (DPX), another body fat analyzer using the DEXA method. Statistical analysis showed that QDR and DPX had smaller variability in percentage fat values than the conventional methods. Moreover, the DEXA method provided detection of regional differences in body fat.

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry versus skinfold measurements in the assessment of total body fat in renal transplant recipients
Article Abstract:
The reliability of skin fold measurement (SFM) of body fat was tested in kidney transplant recipients by comparing assessment with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). In contrast to x-ray absorptiometry, skin fold measurements are based on constant fat distribution and bone mineral content. Results showed that SFM was inferior to DEXA in terms of accuracy in testing total body fat. SFM was noted to inadequately assess the change in body fat typical of renal transplantation. Thus, in this regard, DEXA was deemed as the better technique.
