Evaluation of postdoctoral physician-scientist training programs in obstetrics and gynecology
Article Abstract:
Continued financial support of post-doctoral grants for research in obstetrics and gynecology appears to be warranted. These training programs will also require the commitment of medical school and hospital department chairs. There have been 44 recipients of Reproductive Scientist Development Program grants. Ninety-five percent of these recipients are currently on medical school faculties. Seventy-five percent have secured funding for continued research. Fifteen are employed in an associate or full professor capacity at a medical school.

Is the academic physician-scientist an oxymoron in contemporary obstetrics and gynecology?
Article Abstract:
Talented graduates interested in scientific obstetric and gynecologic careers need to be recruited and funded in order to continue the recent strides made in this field. An initial investment in these scientists can later prove beneficial both financially and scientifically. Established physician-scientists in two national research programs generate more than 70% of their own funding through grants. Preoccupation with concerns over short-term finances could result in a return to mediocre science in obstetrics and gynecology.
