Executive journey: from 1,300 FTEs to none
Article Abstract:
Mary Jane Mastorovich went from the traditional role of a nurse executive at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, VA, to that of a major change agent in a systemwide redesign effort. In the first situation, she was responsible for 1,300 full-time equivalents (FTEs) and an annual budget of $166 million. Her mentors, who were important in her success, were people willing to take risks, and they included her in the risk-taking. Now fewer operational jobs are available and she believes power of influence is as important as power of position. She has found that one must time to think in a job.

Is nursing under new management or is it a matter of semantics?
Article Abstract:
Managed care has taken a bite out of clinical hegemony, and nursing has seen what is coming and tried to manage using new paradigms before other non-nursing groups do so. Allowing the patient to drive the healthcare delivery system and at the same time preparing for change, not fearing the loss of preeminence of nursing as a clinical authority is to walk a fine line. Nursing must protect a valued profession and a needed one, still dealing with business forces and the drive for efficiency and profit.
