FDA chief lays out the case for tobacco regulation
Article Abstract:
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner David A. Kessler discussed the tobacco industry's methods of perpetuating nicotine addiction, in an address to the American Medical Assn (AMA)'s Tobacco Caucus. Kessler described how the FDA had discovered that tobacco company Brown and Williamson was distributing tobacco products made from a new plant with unusually high levels of nicotine. The findings help justify tobacco regulation, and Kessler encouraged AMA members to respond to the Clinton Administration's proposal to limit tobacco advertising that targets minors.
