FDA softens proposal for strict CME rules

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) have been working together to define standards for sponsorship of continuing medical education programs by the pharmaceutical industry. The FDA proposal, which spelled out strict rules to prevent drug companies from promoting their products during educational sessions, are considered restrictive by the educators and the sponsors. New guidelines are under consideration.

AMA gets accreditation contract
Article Abstract:
The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) has awarded the American Medical Association (AMA) a contract to manage the accreditation process for continuing medical education. As part of its bid, the AMA offered the ACCME half a million dollars in subsidies and free use of its staff and facilities. The AMA is expected to more closely monitor continuing education coursework and may propose a system of remedial classes for physicians.

FDA plan sees profession as prime CME monitor
Article Abstract:
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Nov 27, 1992, released a plan to allow professional accreditors to monitor continuing education (CME) programs for physicians. Decisions are extended to the Clinton administration by a 60-day comment period. The current proposal modifies the FDA's previous efforts to separate the pharmaceutical industry's promotional and educational programs.
