Face to face
Article Abstract:
A mixed-race nurse who had worked as a community sister for 10 years amongst people with learning disabilities describes the difference which Project Manager Dave Bennett made to her life. Tracy Shervington maintains that Bennett helped her to recognize her own potential, encouraged her to take a different approach to problems, and was responsible for suggesting she could take a management development course for ethnic-minority nurses. Shervington has had to overcome what she feels is internalized oppression related to her race. She is currently seconded to Bennett's post.

Contraception and young people; the condom club
Article Abstract:
A staff nurses describes a contraceptive and advice service she helped set up for young people. The service is based in a genitourinary clinic and boys from a local secondary school use the service in large numbers during their lunch hour. Records are kept to monitor the use of the service. Teachers and peers are the main referral source. Young people are asked about their sexual activity, they are shown how to use a condom and are told about sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy. The educative element of the service is important.
