Private lives go public in job swap
Article Abstract:
Two nurses describe their experiences of a three-week job swap. One nurse, Nancy Alleyne, is a staff nurse in an 800-bed National Health Service (NHS) hospital. The other, Jane Forgione, is a senior staff nurse in a small private hospital. Forgione enjoyed her experience in the NHS hospital. She found the patients to be very grateful for her care and appreciated not having to constantly respond to patients ringing bells for attention. Alleyne found practical difficulties related to nursing patients in private rooms and she found the high degree of consultant input irritating.

Face to face
Article Abstract:
The birth of premature twin boys provided an opportunity for neonatal junior nurse Kim Alder to form a close friendship with the babies' mother Emma Long. Baby Luke was born with several medical complications which required a long hospital stay. Alder ensured the twin's mother was totally happy and relaxed about leaving either baby when the need arose for her to spend extra time with Baby Luke. Alder also provided Long with information and medical material which would help her cope when the babies eventually go home.
