Facing cancer
Article Abstract:
A hospice nurse recalls the distress she experienced in caring for one patient. The patient had severe facial disfigurement due to cancer which had originated in the lacrimal duct. The patient had one eye removed, but suffered rejection of grafts. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy for progressions of the cancer caused more problems and palliative care became the only option. The nurse sought help for the particular distress she experienced in caring for this patient, and found that it was due to the impossibility of reading facial expressions.

Learning to cope with the fatigue caused by cancer
Article Abstract:
The debilitating tiredness felt by many cancer suffers during the last stages of cancer can be depressing and upsetting at a time when they feel they should be trying to come to terms with dying. Nurses will be aided by the publication of a leaflet specifically aimed at helping patients manage their tiredness and providing information about why they may feel tired. Recommendations include taking some form of light exercise on a regular basis, maintaining health eating and the benefit derived from joining a self-help group.

The feeling of safety engendered by supportive supervision
Article Abstract:
Clinical nurses can offer support to community psychiatric nurses by allowing the freedom and confidence to discuss problems and deal with stress. A supervisory support role enables nurses to feel safe enough to talk about serious matters which may affect their work output. Talking about problems not only prevents the build up of stress in nurses but also prevents nurses taking out their anxieties on vulnerable patients.
