Syringe exchange and risk of infection with hepatitis B and C viruses
Article Abstract:
Needle exchange programs may not protect against hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection. The goal of such exchange programs is the minimal use of contaminated syringes by providing sterile syringes to drug users. Researchers examined the rate of hepatitis seroconversion among infection drug users, who were enrolled between 1994 and 1996, during a follow-up study one year later. Thirty-nine of 187 drugs users became infected with hepatitis C and 46 of 460 drug users contracted hepatitis B.

Analysis of case-control studies of screening: impact of misspecifying the duration of detectable preclinical pathologic changes
Article Abstract:
Screening during the detectable preclinical period (DDP) is significant in preventing the spread of cancer. Researchers in a study developed a computer simulation model of disease occurrence and death rate with or without screening. They selected a population of cases and controls and compared their screening histories. They discovered underestimation of the duration of DDP leads to greater bias than overestimation.

Case-control studies of the efficacy of screening tests designed to prevent the incidence of cancer
Article Abstract:
Screening tests are designed to give early detection of cancer, reduce mortality and give the patient and doctors sufficient time for proper therapy. Such tests include chest radiographs, which detect early lung tumor. Other tests such as sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy not only identify colon and rectal cancer but also the polyps capable of developing into colon or rectal cancer.
