Failing the screen test
Article Abstract:
UK pensioners are fighting the government decision not to invite women over the age of 65 to participate in the national breast cancer screening programme. The government based this decision, made at the launch of the screening programme in the 1980s, on advice that older women would be less likely to attend screening. However, older women are increasingly exercising their right to refer themselves for screening, and this is beginning to place pressure on the service. Women in the over-65 age group have the highest risk of breast cancer.

Fairness at work?: is the government's white paper a good thing for nursing unions?
Article Abstract:
The government white paper Fairness at Work promises workplace recognition for trade unions, and a host of other new employment rights, which are welcomed by nurses, particularly the family friendly policies. However the situation is not so straightforward in areas where trade union recognition is an issue for nurses, such as the private care-home sector. The RCN is disappointed that Fairness at Work fails to add professional nursing issues to the collective bargaining rights.

Cutting the cringe factor out of classrooms and condoms
Article Abstract:
The UK government's sex education guidelines demand that all schools provide advice on contraception and sexual health services and implement policies on child protection and under-age sex. Schools would be able to use funding to bring in health professionals to take sex education classes if teachers did not wish to do so.
