Fatal Car Trunk Entrapment Involving Children--United States, 1987-1998
Article Abstract:
Parents should keep their cars locked with the trunks closed when not in use. Between July and August 1998, 11 U.S. children died in three separate incidents of car trunk entrapment. A search on LEXIS/NEXIS uncovered six more incidents between 1987 and 1998, killing 19 children altogether. All were six years old or younger. All the incidents occurred in hot weather and hyperthermia and asphyxia were listed as the cause of death in many cases. Younger children have a greater risk for heatstroke compared to older children and adults.

Poor control of risk factors for vascular disease among adults with previously diagnosed diabetes
Article Abstract:
Only seven percent of all US patients with diabetes have appropriate blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, according to data from the 1988-1994 and 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). The percentage of diabetic patients who had low blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels did not change substantially between the time the two surveys were done. Diabetics have a greater risk for cardiovascular disease than people without diabetes.

Two Fatal Cases of Adenovirus-Related Illness in Previously Healthy Young Adults--Illinois, 2000
Article Abstract:
It may be necessary to begin producing a vaccine against adenoviruses. Adenoviruses cause respiratory and gastrointestinal disease. During the 1970s and 1980s all military recruits were vaccinated, but the manufacturer stopped making the vaccine in 1996. In 2000, two soldiers died from adenovirus infection.
