Malaria Deaths Following Inappropriate Malaria Chemoprophylaxis--United States, 2001
Article Abstract:
Two Americans died from malaria in 2001 even though they took chloroquine before traveling to sub-Saharan Africa. Unfortunately, the malaria parasite has become resistant to chloroquine in sub-Saharan Africa and many other foreign countries. The CDC recommends mefloquine for people who are considering travel to countries with chloroquine resistance.
