Jimson weed poisoning - Texas, New York, and California, 1994
Article Abstract:
Cases of Jimson weed poisoning in Texas, New York, and California in 1994 illustrate the health hazards that may result from ingesting this toxic plant. Jimson weed contains substances that block stimulation of a part of the nervous system. In June 1994, four teenage boys in Texas drank tea made from Jimson weed and alcohol. Two boys died and two recovered. In October 1994, an 18-year-old man in New York was hospitalized the day after he ingested 50 Jimson weed seeds and other illegal drugs. He recovered within two days and was discharged. Thirteen other cases of Jimson weed poisoning were reported in the same region of New York. Patients were between the ages of 14 and 21, tended to be male, and each had consumed between 30 and 50 Jimson seeds. Common symptoms included visual hallucinations, dilated pupils, rapid heart rate, and dry mouth. Six patients were hospitalized and two required intensive care. In October 1994, six California teenagers required medical care after drinking Jimson weed tea. All recovered and were released from the hospital.

Andrew Jackson's Exposure to Mercury and Lead: Poisoned President?
Article Abstract:
President Andrew Jackson may have had lead and mercury poisoning, but this was probably not the direct cause of his death. Historians know for a fact that he was taking calomel (mercurous chloride) and sugar of lead (lead acetate), both of which were used therapeutically. Researchers analyzed Jackson's hair samples taken in 1815 and 1839. Samples from both years had elevated lead and mercury levels. Lead exposure may have also been a result of two lead bullets, one in his left shoulder and one in his left lung.
