Choroid plexus cysts - association with trisomy: prospective review of 16,059 patients
Article Abstract:
Isolated choroid plexus cysts in the absence of other risk factors do not appear to be associated with genetic abnormalities. Choroid plexus cysts are unusual structures found within the developing fetal brain. Overall, routine ultrasound screening detected a single choroid plexus cyst in 263 of 16,000 fetuses. Thirty-eight women in this group had other risk factors such as advanced maternal age, other fetal abnormalities, or past obstetric or family history. All babies from the group with no other risk factors were normal whereas four babies in the group with risk factors had chromosomal abnormalities.

Choroid plexus cysts and trisomy 18: risk modification based on maternal age and multiple-marker screening
Article Abstract:
Amniocentesis in follow up to finding a choroid plexus cyst on ultrasound imaging does not appear to be justified provided multiple marker screening is normal and the pregnant woman is younger than 37. Fetuses with trisomy 18, a chromosomal abnormality with severe effects, often have choroid plexus cysts in conjunction with other abnormalities. Risk calculations revealed that when multiple marker screening was normal and no other abnormalities were found, the risk of having trisomy 18 with choroid plexus cyst did not exceed the risk of miscarriage from amniocentesis until age 37 or more.
