Financial conflicts of interest and the NIH
Article Abstract:
A report in the Los Angeles Times about possible financial conflicts of interest among scientists who work at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has led its director to consider placing restrictions on the outside activities of its scientists. Since 1995, many NIH scientists have been allowed to receive payments from industry for various activities. This was done to ensure the agency could recruit and retain top scientists.

Conflicts of interest at the NIH - resolving the problem
Article Abstract:
There is concern that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) ethics program is not working - since December 2003, the NIH has been battered by accounts of the outside financial arrangements between some of its employees and pharmaceutical companies. The NIH seeks to eliminate the possibility that the activities of its employees could harm its public health mission because of real or perceived conflicts of interests.

Biomedical research and biosecurity
Article Abstract:
The achievements of modern biomedical research have increased people's ability to misuse discoveries in ways that could threaten the public health or national security. The National Research Council on biotechnology research recommends that 'experiments of concern' must be reviewed and discussed carefully to determine whether they should even be undertaken and carried out, before their full details are published.
