Fluoride varnishes: a review of their clinical use, cariostatic mechanism, efficacy and safety
Article Abstract:
Fluoride varnishes may be effective in preventing cavities in young children. Three fluoride varnishes are available in the US, but the FDA has not approved their use in preventing cavities. They are only approved for lining cavities and for treating hypersensitive teeth. However, fluoride varnishes have been used for preventing cavities in Europe since the early 1980s. The varnish is very effective and easy to apply. Many US dentists are using the varnishes for cavity prevention despite the lack of FDA approval for this purpose.

Evaluation of fluoride release from commercially available fluoride varnishes
Article Abstract:
Two fluoridated tooth varnishes release fluoride for up to five or six months, according to researchers who tested Duraphat and Duraflor on baby teeth that had fallen out. Duraphat released fluoride longer than Duraflor and also released fluoride at the same rate. Duraflor was more variable, indicating that some fluoride varnishes may vary even between tubes of the same product.

Fluoride release from varnishes in two in vitro protocols
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to evaluate fluoride released from fluoride varnishes that were applied with two different protocols. It was found that massed application of fluoride during a single period during the year might be as affective as spaced single application.
