Folic Acid Campaign and Evaluation--Southwestern Virginia, 1997-1999
Article Abstract:
A public health campaign in rural southwestern Virginia to educate women about the need for folic acid supplements was very successful. An assessment in 1996 found higher rates of birth defects in that region than in the entire state. Consequently, in January 1997, local health officials mounted a media campaign consisting of television and radio public service announcements (PSAs), a news conference, newspaper advertisements, and billboards. After the campaign, the number of women of reproductive age who knew about the health benefits of folic acid increased from 31% in 1997 to 75% in 1999.

Human Rabies--Virginia, 1998
Article Abstract:
The case of a man who died from rabies on December 31, 1998, is the only case of rabies in the US in 1998 and the first in Virginia since 1953. The 29-year-old man was a prisoner at the Nottoway Correctional Center and worked at several farms and roadsides. He developed symptoms of rabies on December 14, and rapidly progressed to death. He had no known exposure to bats, but analysis of skin and saliva samples revealed rabies virus typically found in eastern pipistrelle bats and silver-haired bats. Bats that eat insects have very small teeth and a bite may go unrecognized.
