Fresh outlooks
Article Abstract:
Hospital outpatients departments are changing following the rapid movement of patients through hospital, the growth in day surgery and new requirements under the UK Patients Charter that all patients be seen within 30 minutes of an appointment. Outpatient nurses are required to be aware of patients' anxieties, keep them informed, put them at ease and counsel them. The nurses must have good interpersonal skills and are important as information resources, with the nurses also developing a role as practitioners and patient counsellors in the outpatient departments. Outpatients departments in the Royal Liverpool University Trust and Royal Hampshire Hospital are overviewed.

Danger on tap
Article Abstract:
Reseearch has revealed that lead can limit young children's neuropsychological development. Low lead levels may also cause hyperactivity and aggression. The World Health Organisation recommends limiting lead in drinking water to 10 microgram per litre. However, the level in some areas may be up to 50,000 microgram per litre. The problem arises from the action of soft water on old lead pipes. Replacing pipework is the only effective way of removing lead from tap water.
