Friends in high places
Article Abstract:
Very few nurses are decision-makers in the UK, but nurses often emerge as wives, mothers or daughters of men in power. Influence exerted indirectly by nurses on friends and family makes a greater impact than thought, according to Royal College of Nursing's (RCN) parliamentary officer, Peter Addison-Child. The close proximity of nurses to men of power can break down stereotypes powerful people have of nurses. Kenneth Clarke, education secretary, has a nurse as a daughter, and was formerly health secretary.

Huge vote to ditch Rule 12
Article Abstract:
The RCN's recent vote to abolish Rule 12, which prohibits industrial action by nurses, has been criticised by NHS leaders, who believe that no form of industrial action should take place within the NHS. The RCN has now agreed a new version of Rule 12 which allows industrial action which does not harm patients. It has stressed that the decision to scrap Rule 12 does not mean that industrial action is likely to be taken in the near future.
