GP-based memory aid group benefits clients and carers
Article Abstract:
Elderly people who are experiencing memory loss and their carers can have their quality of life improved by attending group meetings at their local surgery, according to studies. Over a period of 6 weeks the elderly members of the group were given ideas on how to compensate for memory loss and their partners were given help in understanding the causes of the condition. Although the group assessed was small, clients and their carers reported that the group had been of some help. Holding the group meetings locally ensured that nurses would be available to give continued assistance.

Asylum seekers
Article Abstract:
The regime at Broadmoor secure hospital, England, contrasts starkly with that at regional secure units (RSUs). At Broadmoor, the staff belong to the Prison Officers' Assn and wear uniforms, while at RSUs nurses belong to nursing unions and wear ordinary clothing. Few patients are allowed to go outside the walls of Broadmoor, usually only after some years, whereas at an RSU there are several wards which allow patients to move from one degree of independence to the next. Living arrangements are more pleasant at RSUs, and there is a different way of handling violent incidents.

Carers' perspectives
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to elder abuse are complicated, particularly where carers are concerned. Although some relationships are abusive this should not undermine the valuable contributions made by carers to welfare provision. The Carers (Recognition and Services) Act aims to give carers and those receiving care, the right to their own assessments.
