Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the funding of long-term care for older people in Scotland are discussed. The executive plans to proceed with free personal care in autumn 2001, but the details of provision are not yet clear. This is a welcome step towards ensuring that older people are cared for with the respect they deserve.

A nursing retention and recruitment crisis in Scotland is hoped to be averted, through lessons learned by the experiences of England. Scotland is facing a nursing workforce that is close to retirement, a birth rate that is declining, and a population that is aging.
